什么是SSN和美国人的SSN号码规律
SSN是 Social Security Number 的缩写，译为「社会安全号码」，为美国社会安全卡（Social Security Card）上的 9 位数字。SSN 原本目的是用于追踪个人的纳税情况，但是现在用途已被扩大到包括区分个人身份，类似中国「居民身份证号码」之作用。社会安全号码一般写作类似 450-12-3672 这样「3位 - 2位 - 4位」的形式。
用途
社会安全号码是美国联邦政府社会安全局发给公民、永久居民、临时（工作）居民的一组九位数字号码。以前的用途多用来报税用。用自己社会安全号码上报的税等纳税人退休后而领取退休金用的。但是，社会安全号码的功用已被大大地扩大了。它不仅用于报税，它还是被一般人看成能否在美国工作的一种凭据，因此，被一些人称为“工卡”(其实是错误的)。现在申请驾照，要社安卡；到银行开帐户，也要社安卡，甚至连租公寓住，也要社安卡。为什么呢？因为社安号码早已和自己的信用(Credit)联系在一起了。社安号码已在事实上成为一种类似良民证号码。因此，社安卡或号码非常重要。
Since 1973, social security numbers have been issued by our central office. The first three (3) digits of a person's social security number are determined by the ZIP Code of the mailing address shown on the application for a social security number. Prior to 1973, social security numbers were assigned by our field offices. The number merely established that his/her card was issued by one of our offices in that State.??See also High Group List of SSN's.
